A pedigree tree is a chart that maps a person's direct line of descent — parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on back through the generations — usually shown as a branching diagram with the individual at the bottom or center and ancestors fanning out above or behind them. Unlike a broader family tree, which can include siblings, cousins, and descendants in every direction, a pedigree tree stays focused on direct ancestry: the unbroken biological line from child to parent, generation after generation. Each person on the chart is typically marked with key facts — full name, birth and death dates, and place — turning the diagram into both a visual map and a quick reference of documented lineage.
